Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July 2026. Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute.

How the final went

Spain controlled the game and outshot Argentina 20-3, but could not score in 90 minutes. Argentina were then reduced to ten men when Enzo Fernandez picked up his second yellow card in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the second half, and played all of extra time a man down. Torres broke the deadlock midway through the first period of extra time.

A second star, and a double

It is Spain's second World Cup, after 2010. Because Spain's women won the 2023 Women's World Cup, they became the first nation to hold the men's and women's titles at the same time.

The tournament was the first with three hosts (the United States, Canada and Mexico) and 48 teams. England finished third after a 6-4 win over France in the play-off for third place, which was played the day before the final.

In context: Argentina were the defending champions after winning in Qatar in 2022 on penalties against France.
