Overview
The UEFA European Championship, the Euros, is held every four years. Spain won the 2024 edition in Germany, beating England 2-1 in the final, to take a record fourth title.
The first Euros in 1960 had four teams in the final tournament and was won by the Soviet Union. Germany (including West Germany) have won three times and Spain four; Italy and France have two each.
The tournament has produced famous shocks, including Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004. Euro 2020 was played in 2021 because of the pandemic, and Italy beat England on penalties at Wembley.
Spain beat England 2-1 in Berlin in 2024. The next edition, in 2028, is hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, with the final at Wembley on 9 July 2028.
How it works
Since 2016 the final tournament has 24 teams in six groups, followed by a round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. Teams qualify through a qualifying competition.
